What are invisible characters in AI-generated text?

They survive copy and paste, so they travel with text from a chat window into your CMS, your captions or your document. Beyond any fingerprinting concern, they break search, sorting, diffing and CSV imports, which is why stripping them is standard text hygiene.

No, and you should be sceptical of any tool that promises that. Removing invisible characters removes one specific carrier. Some watermarking schemes instead bias which words a model picks — that signal lives in the wording itself, so only rewriting can affect it, and no tool can verify the result against a vendor's private detector. AI detectors also work mostly on statistical style rather than any watermark, and they produce false positives on human writing. Treat this as text cleanup, not a guarantee.

Standard emoji are preserved. The emoji variation selectors VS15 and VS16 (U+FE0E and U+FE0F) are always kept, because emoji presentation depends on them. One thing to know: multi-part emoji like the family sequence are joined by zero-width joiners, so removing zero-width characters splits them into their component emoji. If your text relies on those, untick the zero-width category before cleaning.
